SUMMARY:Media Release – Disappointed with Molonglo Commercial Centre Delays
DESCRIPTION:The Molonglo Valley Community Forum (MVCF) today expressed its profound disappointment with the Molonglo Commercial Centre being delayed by a further two years\, as revealed in the 2021 ACT Budget. \nInterim spokesperson for the MVCF\, Ryan Hemsley\, said the delays are incredibly frustrating for residents of the Molonglo Valley\, who have had to rely on neighbouring facilities in Weston Creek since 2012\, which are already under significant pressure. \n“Today the ACT Government has reneged on an explicit promise made at last year’s election to ‘fast track’ work on this important commercial precinct. This will leave residents of Molonglo without access to local community and retail facilities for at least another decade. \n“To describe this as disappointing is an understatement. Our local members are well aware of the difficulties Molonglo residents have faced in terms of equitable access to shops\, community facilities and other critical services\, as well as the impact this has had on residents of neighbouring districts. \n“This inexplicable two-year delay will only serve to further entrench these existing inequalities as the Molonglo Valley continues to grow over the course of the next ten years and beyond.” \nMr Hemsley said that residents were eager to collaborate with the ACT Government to ensure first-class development outcomes for the Molonglo Commercial Centre\, which has been planned since 2006. \nThe MVCF has reached out to the Minister for Planning to request clarification on why this delay has occurred despite his assurances in April 2021 that the first land release was on track to occur in 2021-22. \n\nMedia Release\nLetter to the Minister for Planning\n\n  \nMEDIA CONTACT \n\n\n\nRyan Hemsley \nInterim spokesperson\, Molonglo Valley Community Forum \n0401 150 723 \ninfo@mvcommunityforum.org.au

SUMMARY:Media Release – The ACTs eighth Community Council announced
DESCRIPTION:The ACT Government has formally recognised the Molonglo Valley Community Forum (MCVF) as the 8th Community Council in Canberra. \nIn February this year\, ACT Labor backbencher\, Dr Marisa Paterson MLA\, moved a motion calling on the ACT Government to support the establishment of a Community Council for residents of the Molonglo Valley. \nThere are currently seven Community Councils across the ACT\, operating as non-political groups\, designed to represent a broad range of interests and needs of the local communities they represent. \nDr Paterson said “This is really exciting for everyone living in the Molonglo Valley. It struck me that a separate Community Council was needed for the area\, in recognition of the distinct needs of the ACTs newest greenfield development as it continues to develop and grow”. \n“I’ve attended all of the group’s ‘community forum’ meetings this year and have been very impressed with the strong sense of community cohesion\, the diversity\, energy and passion of residents wanting to help shape the future of the area. The ACT Government’s formal recognition of the group as a Community Council will open up new opportunities through funding and in-kind support”. \nThe formal recognition of the Molonglo Valley Community Forum as a community council is welcomed by Interim Spokesperson\, Ryan Hemsley. \nMr Hemsley said “We are excited to become an official Community Council and act as a forum for the voices of residents\, businesses and community groups within the Molonglo Valley”. \n“As a growing region\, we are keen to support the communities of Coombs\, Denman Prospect\, Whitlam\, Wright and the future suburbs to be developed in the Molonglo Valley”. \nFounding member of the MVCF\, Monique Brouwer\, encourages the community to get involved in establishing this new council as a united voice that truly represents this diverse district. \nMrs Brouwer said “There are many ways to get involved in the MVCF. You can become a member\, volunteer for the committee\, attend monthly public meetings\, join the mailing list\, follow the Facebook page\, or contact the MVCF with any ideas or concerns”. “If you are interested in becoming an MVCF committee member\, the first election will occur in October 2021\, and we encourage anyone keen to represent the Molonglo Valley to nominate”. \nThe next meeting of the MVCF is on Thursday\, 15 July 2021\, commencing at 7:30pm in the library at Charles Weston School Coombs. Simon Tennent\, Molonglo Development Director from the Suburban Land Agency\, will present the Coombs and Wright Village Design & Place Framework. \nEND \nMEDIA CONTACTS \n\n\n\nRyan Hemsley \nInterim spokesperson\, Molonglo Valley Community Forum \n0401 150 723 \ninfo@mvcommunityforum.org.au\nAnna Gurnhill \n0400 843 858 \nAnnaG.Gurnhill@parliament.act.gov.au\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload the media release

SUMMARY:Media Release – Disappointed by Molonglo bridge delays
DESCRIPTION:DISAPPOINTED WITH MOLONGLO BRIDGE DELAYS \nThe Molonglo Valley Community Forum (MVCF) and Weston Creek Community Council (WCCC) today expressed their collective disappointment in the delay of the Molonglo Valley bridge over Coppins Crossing. \nMinister for Transport and City Services\, Chris Steel MLA\, announced that construction of the new flood-proof Molonglo River Bridge is now scheduled to commence in 2023\, with completion set for 2025 at the earliest. \nInterim spokesperson for the MVCF\, Ryan Hemsley said the delays are frustrating for residents and businesses of the Molonglo Valley\, and for many Canberrans who are affected when Coppins Crossing floods. \n“This new completion date is one year after the original date outlined in the ACT Government’s 2019 Infrastructure Plan\,” said Mr Hemsley. \n“This bridge is a vital piece of infrastructure for the Molonglo Valley\, Weston Creek and Canberra. When Coppins Crossing floods\, the pressure and congestion placed on the Cotter Road and Tuggeranong Parkway impacts businesses and residents right across the ACT.” \nBill Gemmell\, interim Chair of WCCC\, expressed concerns that the signs are there for the future slippage of the completion of this vital piece of infrastructure should current budget pressures continue. \n“As the events of Wednesday evening demonstrated\, a couple of relatively minor traffic crashes showed us how the current arrangements have very little redundancy. Population growth will make the situation even more tentative\,” said Mr Gemmell. \n“Many residents will remain concerned that there are limited emergency routes should a natural disaster such as bushfire require an evacuation.” \nFunding has already been allocated for the bridge’s construction\, with the Commonwealth Government contributing $87.5 million and the ACT Government matching the funding in its 2020-21 budget. \n“This bridge will significantly improve transport and traffic safety across the ACT. We will be asking Minister Steel for an explanation of this delay\,” said Mr Hemsley. \nEND \nMEDIA CONTACTS \n\n\n\nRyan Hemsley \nInterim spokesperson\, Molonglo Valley Community Forum \n0401 150 723 \ninfo@mvcommunityforum.org.au\nBill Gemmell \nInterim Chair\, Weston Creek Community Council \n0413 761 556 \ninfo@westoncreek.org.au\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload the media release
